PCOS Explained
What PCOS does to our body and mental well-being is simply upsetting. Every day, when you get up in the morning and look at yourself in the mirror, you notice some dark coarse hair growing back on your lip, chin, neck, or chest. PCOS can take our confidence away. Do you agree?
What is PCOS?
PCOS, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is a common hormone problem for women. One of the symptoms is Excess Hair Growth. The causes of PCOS are unknown. Some evidence suggests that genetics plays a role. In fact, many women have PCOS to some degree, but they don't know it as they are too embarrassed to talk to their doctors.
How can I stop PCOS?
Excess hair growth is often caused by extra androgen production. Currently, there is no cure for PCOS but there are medications that can block the effect of androgen on the skin, or birth control pills to help balance hormone levels.
Is there anything else I can do to stop PCOS?
Laser hair removal is an option for your hair reduction. Laser treatment can treat your symptoms of hair growth but cannot treat your hormone balance. You will more than likely need to continue having maintenance sessions after a course of treatment. Saying this, if excess facial hair growth is getting you down, it may be worth trying.
Is there anything I need to know before trying Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal works best for people with dark coarse hair and fair skin tones. If you have dark coarse hair and are thinking about treatment, try it before your hair starts to turn grey, as Laser won’t work on grey, white, or light hair colours.
Also, you will need to protect your skin from sunlight to avoid getting a tan, as this will prevent laser treatments.
